Even though they seem at the height of their powers, there’s one big thing that the Ohio State football team needs to worry about.

The Ohio State football team has very clearly been the best team in the Big Ten since Ryan Day took over. They were the best team even before he did. Even though they are the best team in the conference, they still have one big thing they need to worry about.

That thing is competing with Alabama. That’s who they will be compared to over the next five years. Based on last season, there is still a gap between the two programs. That gap was exposed in the National Championship Game. It told Ryan Day that he needed to up his game.

Last year, and really the last two seasons, told us that the Buckeyes don’t have any peers in the Big Ten or really any other conference. The only team that is better than them is Alabama. Some would try to argue that Clemson is equal with them, but that’s just untrue.

The Buckeyes beat them badly in the Sugar Bowl last season and should have beaten them in 2019 if not for some referee shenanigans. Ohio State has surpassed them. Now they just have to catch up to Nick Saban, and that starts in the recruiting game.

Day has been recruiting his butt off recently. He got a win when J.T. Tuimoloau canceled his visit to Alabama. Even if he ends up choosing Oregon over Ohio State, it’s good that he doesn’t go to Tuscaloosa. Saban doesn’t need any more top recruits.

Your program is in a pretty good spot if you’re only worried about being the absolute best team in the country, not just your conference. That’s a spot that Day would love to occupy for years to come.
