Ohio State basketball: Jae’Sean Tate makes All-Rookie Team
By Ryan Stano
The former Ohio State basketball player might be older than the other rookies in the NBA this season, but Jae’Sean Tate played like one of the best.
Jae’Sean Tate is an older NBA rookie at the age of 25. He had to play in Australia first before getting an opportunity to play for the Rockets this season. Even though Houston wasn’t good once James Harden got traded, it opened the door for Tate to shine.
Tate played well even though the team around him didn’t. He played well enough to make the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team. He averaged 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.2 steals. The Rockets seem to have found themselves a gem in Tate.
It’s good for the Ohio State basketball program to have someone win an award like this. Even though Chris Holtmann only coached him for one year, it still helps that Holtmann can say that he coached someone who made an NBA All-Rookie Team.
It will be interesting to see how Tate continues his NBA career moving forward. He is a young piece on a team that is rebuilding, so he should get plenty of playing time in the next few years. Tate started most of the season, so he should be one of the players the Rockets build around.
I’m not sure how Tate takes his game to the next level. He needs to work on his three-point shooting still, as he only shot 30.8% from deep. He has time to do that. But in today’s NBA, you have to be able to shoot the long ball if you want to get substantial playing time as a forward.
I love watching Tate succeed. He was one of my favorite players to ever suit up for the Buckeyes. Knowing how hard he works, he definitely deserves any accolades that he is able to acquire.
