With the news that Coach K is retiring, could Duke try to poach Chris Holtmann from the Ohio State basketball program?

A college basketball bombshell was dropped today. According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, Coach K will be retiring at the end of the season from being the Head Coach at Duke. One of the greatest coaches of all time will be stepping away after 2021-22.

That leaves a void in that program. Could they try to fill it with Chris Holtmann? The Ohio State basketball coach has re-built the program into a Big Ten contender in his first three years as the coach. He is still young enough to also make a move like this.

Even though Goodman says that the favorite to take over the Duke job is former player Job Scheyer, it would be foolish for them to look around at all of the possible candidates. This is one of the premier jobs in the country and could be the most recognizable college basketball brand in the country.

It would not surprise me if Holtmann got an interview, or at the very least, a call about the job. He has name a name for himself everywhere that he’s been. Even though he hasn’t quite had the postseason success yet, he is still a really good coach.

In my opinion, it’s very unlikely that Holtmann leaves Ohio State for this job. Holtmann won’t be one of the top candidates that Duke will look at. Holtmann also likes being in Columbus and his family now has roots here. He’s not leaving unless he is fired or he retires.

This is the only job that I could see him maybe taking if offered. The thing is, I doubt he gets that offer. Ohio State basketball fans don’t need to worry too much about that.
