A former Ohio State football player got an award after leaving the program.

While former Buckeye tight end Jake Hausmann didn’t get a lot of attention for his play on the field, he continues to collect honors for his performance off the field. On Wednesday, Hausmann was named as one of five Ohio State athletes to be recipients of the Anne and Woody Hayes Award. The school describes the award in the official announcement,

"The award, established in 1979, provides one or more varsity athletes with financial assistance for postgraduate studies. The recipients of this scholarship are student-athletes who have demonstrated academic achievement (3.00 grade-point average minimum) and leadership qualities."

Hausmann was Academic All-Big Ten three times and a five-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. He graduated with a degree in strategic communications.

When he signed with the Buckeyes out of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, he was considered one of the top five tight ends in the country. That lofty ranking never really transferred to the field with the Buckeyes.

Hausmann played in only thirty games in his five-year Ohio State football career and caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. His value to the offense came as a blocker in multiple tight end formations; a role in which he excelled. Although he was not selected in the recent NFL Draft, he impressed the Detroit Lions enough to sign him as a free agent.

The Buckeyes will need to replace Hausmann with someone like Cade Stover. They need him to be able to step up and block and do all of the little things on special teams as well. Hausmann was good at doing those types of things.

Speaking of Woody Hayes, I’m working on a story about the revered former head coach. Please make sure to visit Scarlet and Game on Saturday to read that article.
