The former Ohio State football player was the tenth pick in last month’s NFL Draft and is already turning heads around the Bears organization.

Justin Fields was great the last two seasons for the Ohio State football program. Anyone that watches the Buckeyes on a regular basis knows how much he did for this program on and off the field. He should have been picked higher in the Draft but slid to tenth overall.

Chicago ended up trading up to get him, and it sounds like he has already turned heads in his first few workouts with the team. His arm has looked lively and he seems to be very accurate with the deep ball. He even is correcting other players’ mistakes already.

To have a rookie quarterback that is already prepared enough to know what his receivers should have done in his first practice is remarkable. He saw the defense change his coverage and knew what the receiver should have done to alter his route, so he let him know that.

It also takes leadership to immediately let the guy know what he should have done instead. He’s a rookie out there in his first practice at the NFL level and he takes it upon himself to do something like that. Matt Nagy has to love that has a head coach.

Will the former Ohio State football player be the starting quarterback?

As of right now, no. Nagy seems to be pumping the breaks on those rumors. It looks like Andy Dalton is still going to start the season as the starting quarterback. He is a veteran and has made a Pro Bowl before, so it’s not the worst option to put out there.

How long Dalton remains that starter remains to be seen though. Fields is an extraordinary talent and is clearly impressing early in his Chicago tenure. Obviously, there aren’t any defenders in his face yet, but this is still a good first step. He’s showing what he can be in the future.

Fields will be closely watched all season long by Ohio State football fans. We all want him to succeed in the NFL. I bet Fields starts by Week 8 of the season. There’s no reason to delay his development any longer than that. He can sit and learn for half the year and then get some reps in.

Next. Thayer Munford will help QB succeed at high level. dark

I wouldn’t be surprised if Fields ends up starting even before then. I think Week 8 is the absolute longest it would take for him to start.
