Ohio State football: Master Teague trying to hold onto starting RB job

The Ohio State football program has a deep running back room. Master Teague is trying to keep that room from taking too many snaps from him in 2021.

Master Teague was the starting running back for the start of the 2020 season for the Ohio State football team. He started off slowly while he was still recovering from an offseason Achilles injury. Once he got going though, he was able to play stronger once his body allowed.

Despite that, Teague still lost his starting job to Trey Sermon after Teague got hurt again. Sermon was unbelievable and deserved to keep that job. Now that Sermon is gone though, the starting job is Teague’s to lose since he is the Buckeye with the most experience.

Teague has some work to do if he wants to do that. The running back room is as loaded as it has been in several years. There are the returning backs of Miyan Williams and Steele Chambers. Williams can and should get snaps. Chambers will likely transfer.

Evan Pryor is a four-star freshman who looks really strong as a back early. He may not get all of the snaps he wants, but he should get some playing time. Teague should be able to hold off Pryor without too much concern for that starting spot.

The biggest threat to Teague is by far TreyVeon Henderson. The five-star freshman has all of the tools you look for in a running back. He is by far the most talented running back the Buckeyes have on their roster. That’s who Teague should worry about.

Teague has the edge when it comes to experience. He will likely start the opener against Minnesota because of that. But he needs to have a big game to keep his job. He needs to have at least 150 yards in every game he plays because Henderson is breathing down his neck.

If that doesn’t happen, Henderson will snatch that job right up. Teague has the power to keep him at bay. We’ll see if he does.
