Ohio State football: J.T. Barrett to tryout with Cowboys
By Del Barris
J.T. Barrett is one of the best quarterbacks in Ohio State football history. He is trying to get a chance in the NFL now.
Former Buckeye great J.T. Barrett is getting another shot at the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys are bringing him in for a look at their rookie minicamp this weekend.
Barrett went undrafted in 2018 but was signed by the New Orleans Saints. He did not appear in a regular season game and spent the season on and off the team’s practice squad. He did manage to score a rushing touchdown in a preseason game (watch that here).
He was let go by the Saints in August of 2019 and signed ten days later by Seattle. The Seahawks put him on waivers three weeks later. After an injury to Drew Brees, Barrett was once again signed by the Saints and assigned to their practice squad.
He was released again after about a month. Pittsburgh signed him to their practice squad on Christmas Eve that year but released him during the 2020 preseason. Barrett played a few games with The Alphas of The Spring League last fall.
The native of Wichita Falls, Texas was a four-year starter for the Buckeyes and the program’s only three-time captain. He is the only quarterback for either Ohio State or Michigan to go 4-0 as a starter in the series. Barrett is the Big Ten’s all-time leader in touchdowns and was named as the first-team quarterback on the conference’s All-Decade Team.
If Barrett survives the weekend tryout, he will most likely battle Ben DiNucci and Garrett Gilbert for the Cowboys’ number three quarterback job. DiNucci and Gilbert were both with the team last year and each started one game. Former Illinois State quarterback Brady Davis will also be at the tryout this weekend.
It’s great to see Barrett get another chance to make an NFL roster. It may not be much of a chance, but it is at least a chance. Hopefully, this is the chance that turns into a permanent roster spot for him. It’d be nice for the Ohio State football program to have more quarterbacks in the NFL.
