The Ohio State football team was able to make the National Championship Game in 2020 because of great quarterback play. QB play will once again determine this team’s ceiling in 2021.

Justin Fields is no more. He is off to Chicago to enjoy the spoils of the NFL. He leaves behind an Ohio State football program that has very little experience at the quarterback position. In fact, no one has thrown a collegiate pass in that room.

A major reason why the Buckeyes played for a national title last season is because of the strong play of Fields. He helped elevate the rest of the offense to new heights because of his skill. Quarterback play will once again determine if Ohio State can reach that game in 2021.

The quarterback play doesn’t have to be as strong as it was in 2020. It most certainly won’t be anyway, Fields was really good. The rest of the offense is good enough to help the quarterback ease themselves into the season. He’s going to be throwing to the best wide receiving corps in the country and has two of the best tackles blocking for him out there.

Because the offense is so good around him, the quarterback doesn’t need to play perfectly. Whether it’s C.J. Stroud or Kyle McCord (Jack Miller is likely out of the equation), he won’t have to put a lot of pressure on himself to win the game by himself.

If the QB does play as Fields did though, this team could be the team to beat in college football in 2021. Their offense can lead the way to another National Championship Game appearance. This time, they could end up winning it all.

No matter who the quarterback is, Buckeye fans should be very excited about this season and what it could entail. QB is still the most important position on the field though, and that person will determine how far this team goes.
