The former Ohio State football coach drafted his former tight end, Luke Farrell, at the start of the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

It’s a Buckeye reunion. Urban Meyer recruited Luke Farrell to the Ohio State football program. Now, he brings him into the Jacksonville Jaguars organization. The tight end will reunite with his former head coach and will pair with new quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

For a fifth-round pick, the Jags are getting a good player in Farrell. He was the best blocking tight end that the Buckeyes had this past year. Farrell does a really good job in the running game with his blocks. He gets to the second level well and keeps his blocker engaged.

For an offense that will have two good running backs in James Robinson and Travis Etienne, Farrell is going to need to block well. Urban knows he can do that. In the passing game, Farrell has sure hands and can be a decent red-zone threat. He actually had his best year in 2018 when Meyer was in his final year coaching the Buckeyes.

In that season, he had 20 catches for 205 yards and one touchdown. In the last two seasons, he only had 12 catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. You can argue he was under-utilized under Ryan Day. That’s what Meyer is banking on here.

What helps Farrell is that the Jaguars don’t have a true number one tight end. If he works hard, he could emerge out of training camp as that top target from the tight end room. His blocking skills already give him a shot to play significant snaps next season.

Next. Tommy Togiai goes to the Browns in the fourth round. dark

This is a good pick late in the draft for the Jaguars. Meyer is clearly trying to build the offense in Jacksonville, and Farrell can fit well into that.
