Ohio State football leads NFL Draft with 10 prospects taken
By Ryan Stano
Nobody had more draft picks in 2021 than the Ohio State football program. They had a whopping 10 players selected in this year’s draft, tied with Alabama for the most in the draft.
There’s a reason it’s THE Ohio State University. This draft showed it off. The Buckeyes had 10 prospects taken in the 2021 NFL Draft. In fact, no one had more players taken in this year’s draft than the Ohio State football program. They dominated the draft.
Justin Fields led things off by being the loan Buckeye taken in the first round this year. He was taken by the Bears. Then Josh Myers was drafted in the second round by the Packers, as was Pete Werner by the Saints. Trey Sermon was taken in the third round by the 49ers, as was Wyatt Davis by the Vikings. Baron Browning was the last pick of the third round by Denver.
On day three, five more Buckeyes were taken. Tommy Togiai was selected in the fourth round by the Browns. He was the only Buckeye taken in the fourth round. Luke Farrell was the first guy taken in the fifth round by his former coach Urban Meyer. Shaun Wade was also taken in the fifth round by the Ravens.
The sixth round didn’t see any Buckeyes selected. In fact, the last Buckeye taken in the draft was Jonathon Cooper, who was taken the seventh round by Denver. All 10 players are guys who should make their respective teams and have a chance to make a real impact.
This is a massive recruiting tool for Ryan Day and his program. There’s a reason the 2020 team made the national title. This program knows how to coach its players and get them to the next level. Day can just point to this draft as proof of that.
A draft like this is how the Buckeyes can get some top recruits into their program. When you can show recruits that no other program prepared their kids as well to play on Sundays as Ohio State did, that’s a pretty powerful recruiting tool.
I look forward to following all of these players in the next steps in their journey!
