Where former Ohio State QB Tate Martell could transfer to
By Ryan Stano
The former Ohio State football player is on the move once again after leaving Miami. It seems fairly obvious where he will end up though.
Tate Martell was part of Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class. He was a four-star prospect that had a lot of hype surrounding him coming out of Nevada. He was the second-best dual-threat quarterback in the country back in 2018. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind journey.
After playing as a freshman at Ohio State, he was set to compete for the starting job after Dwayne Haskins headed to the NFL. Martell did have an impressive game against Rutgers that year, going 10/10 for 121 yards and a touchdown to go along with 8 carries for 95 yards and a score.
Martell famously tweeted that Justin Fields hadn’t earned the starting spot when he transferred in, and then Martell transferred a few days after Fields arrived on campus. He then left for Miami where he only played in 3 games in 2019 and didn’t play any at all last year.
Martell then entered the transfer portal again, seeing that the writing was on the wall for him. He hasn’t committed anywhere yet for the 2021 season, but it seems that where he’s going to end up isn’t much of a mystery. According to 247Sports, they believe Martell is headed to UNLV.
UNLV would make sense for him. He is from Las Vegas and played at Bishop Gorman in Vegas in high school. It’s a step down in terms of the level of the football program, which I think he needs. He needs to go somewhere that doesn’t take football quite as seriously as Ohio State or Miami.
If he does end up at UNLV, there is still no guarantee he will play there. We saw that in Miami after he ended up there. He will need to work for that starting job. Martell is running out of time to get himself on the field.
It’s always interesting to see where former Buckeyes end up, especially a polarizing one like Martell.
