Ohio State football: Ryan Day is a better recruiter than Urban Meyer
By Ryan Stano
In just a short time as the head coach of the Ohio State football program, Ryan Day has already established himself as one of the best recruiters in the country. He has shown he’s better than his predecessor as a recruiter.
Urban Meyer had some excellent recruiting classes while he was leading the Ohio State football program. He won a national championship and won three Big Ten titles too. Simply put, he was an excellent coach for the Buckeyes and is one of the best coaches they’ve ever had.
Ryan Day has shown that he is also a great coach in his own right. His results on the field speak for themselves. While it’s still debatable whether or not he’s better than Urban on the field, there is no doubt that he is already better than Meyer was on the recruiting trail.
Meyer was certainly spectacular, never having a recruiting class lower than 7th in the country. He had several classes that were ranked second or third as well. Day also had the second-ranked class in the country last season and does so again this season.
Part of the reason why Meyer’s classes were so great late in his tenure is because of Day. His ability to recruit offensive talent helped boost those class rankings. That has shown up as a head coach as well, especially when it comes to recruiting quarterbacks.
All three current quarterbacks on the roster were all highly ranked recruits. Stroud was the second-best quarterback in the country in 2020, while Jack Miller was 13th as a four-star. Kyle McCord was the third-best QB as a five-star recruit.
Next season, Day has Quinn Ewers committed in 2022. He is the best player in the country and will be a rock star at the quarterback position. If Day can finish with the best class in the country for 2022, something Urban never did at Ohio State, he will solidify being a better recruiter for sure.
Day will continue to recruit hard and should finish with yet another stellar class in 2022.
