The Ohio State football team will have a new quarterback in the Fall. Who that is remains to be seen. Will the two losers of the battle immediately transfer out?

The Ohio State football team won’t have the services of Justin Fields at quarterback anymore. A tight three-way battle between C.J. Stroud, Jack Miller, and Kyle McCord will rage on into the Fall. One will emerge while the other two will be stuck on the bench.

In a world where the transfer portal has become a weapon for players to utilize, and they can be eligible immediately, would the losers of the quarterback battle enter the transfer portal and leave before the season starts? Could the Buckeyes lose both backup quarterbacks?

I think this is a distinct possibility. It’s almost certain that at least one of these quarterbacks leave. Right now, the leading candidate to transfer out is Jack Miller after his poor performance in the Spring Game. If that happens, it would just be Stroud and McCord left.

The leader for the job right now is Stroud. Let’s say he ends up winning the job; would McCord leave as a true freshman to try and start elsewhere? If Stroud starts this year, that paves the way for Quinn Ewers to possibly start in 2022 and at the minimum in 2023.

It would make sense for McCord to leave as soon as possible so that he can find a team and learn the new offense as quickly as he can so he can start. McCord would likely get jumped by Ewers in this scenario, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to stay and be a perpetual backup.

If McCord wins the job, Stroud has more of a chance to stay. He is someone who knows the offense and is beloved by his teammates. He could jump in if McCord struggles as a true freshman and could overtake the starting job if that were to occur.

Next. Which Ohio State freshman will have the biggest impact?. dark

My guess is that the Buckeyes lose one of the three quarterbacks. I think the other loser stays as a backup just in case of an injury. It’s an interesting problem for Ryan Day and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff to have.
