Why the Patriots should trade up for Justin Fields
If the Patriots want a franchise quarterback, Justin Fields would be the perfect guy to trade up and get.
For weeks, there have been endless debates on where each of the top quarterbacks will land in this year’s NFL draft. Trevor Lawrence is headed to Jacksonville but it will be a mystery as to where Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Justin Fields, and Trey Lance will land until Roger Goodell calls out their names on draft day.
Despite all the different scenarios for potential landing spots for Justin Fields, could the New England Patriots be the best opportunity for the former Buckeyes QB? Since Tom Brady departed to the Buccaneers, the Patriots haven’t found the right successor to continue the Patriot Way.
Cam Newton’s Patriot debut was rough as he finished the season with 2,657 yards passing with just 8 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He rushed for 592 yards with 12 touchdowns.
The Patriots signed Newton to a 1-year, $14 million deal to keep him a Patriot through this upcoming season. For Bill Belichick, this would be the perfect opportunity to trade up to draft Justin Fields.
This is a win-win scenario for both the Patriots and Justin Fields. The future of the NFL is heading in the direction of dual-threat quarterbacks. It is crucial for an offensive coordinator to have a quarterback able to run RPOs, roll out of the pocket and keep plays alive when the pocket collapses. For Fields, he would have the opportunity to learn from a former MVP, who embodies the same skill set as him.
Fields would give them all the skills that a younger and healthier Newton would give them. He is sturdy enough to take hits in the pocket, he can throw it deep down the field, and he can run the ball on designed quarterback keepers if needed.
The Patriots organization needs their next franchise quarterback and what better way to begin this next era with Justin Fields leading the charge.
