Ohio State football: Fields could change QB outlook in NFL
By Ryan Stano
If the former Ohio State football player succeeds in the NFL, it could change the whole narrative when it comes to quarterbacks from OSU.
The Ohio State football program doesn’t have the best track record at producing great NFL quarterbacks. They really haven’t had one be successful at the next level at all. They are hoping that Justin Fields can change that narrative around the league.
If Fields lights it up like everyone around the program expects him to, it could change how the NFL views quarterbacks coming out of the Ohio State football program. That narrative is part of what is dragging Fields down draft boards at the moment.
Fields certainly has all of the tools to be successful. He can make all of the throws and all of the reads. He is also extremely fast and can use his legs to get out of trouble or gain yards on designed run plays. Fields can help a bad team become a really good team quickly.
It is a shame that the fact that the Buckeyes haven’t had a good quarterback in the NFL is dragging down Fields. His talent should speak for itself, no matter what college he attended. Yet, it hasn’t. Instead, Fields might be the fifth quarterback taken in the Draft now.
If Fields does succeed though, that opens up the recruiting flood gates even more for Ryan Day. He has already done a great job of recruiting elite quarterback talent. But having results to show from the NFL makes that recruiting job that much easier.
Only time will tell if Fields is truly the real deal. Everything that I’ve seen from him tells me he will be. Hopefully, he shows that off in his second Pro Day today.
