Ohio State football: Eddie George named Head Coach at Tennessee State
By Ryan Stano
The former all-time Ohio State football great now gets his first chance to be the head coach of a football program at any level.
Eddie George is truly one of the greatest players in Ohio State football history. He won the Heisman trophy back in 1995 and had the most rushing yards in a single game in Buckeye history until Trey Sermon broke it in his great performance against Northwestern.
George was a great NFL player too. He made the Pro Bowl four times, was Second-Team All-Pro once, and First-Team All-Pro once as well. Since he retired from the NFL, he has worked as an analyst and also had a stint in Broadway. Now he can add “Head Coach” to his resumé.
George has been named the next coach at Tennesee State. Tennessee State is currently playing football in the Spring after canceling their Fall season due to the pandemic. They are currently just 2-4 and have one final game in their season.
The announcement was first reported by Brett McMurphy of Stadium on Twitter.
Even though George has no head coaching experience, this seems to be the move for most college programs. Both football and basketball programs across the country seem to be hiring former players who don’t have any coaching experience.
If George coaches anything like he played, he will be an excellent coach. It will be interesting to see how well George will be able to recruit. Former great players typically don’t have a hard time recruiting initially. After they start either winning or losing is what changes that.
We wish George nothing but the best in his next endeavor!
