Ohio State football: 49ers would make a mistake drafting Jones
By Ryan Stano
It would be a huge mistake for the 49ers to draft Mac Jones instead of former Ohio State football player Justin Fields.
Justin Fields had a great career as an Ohio State football player. He led the Buckeyes to plenty of wins in his two years in Columbus. Apparently, that’s not enough for some NFL executives as his draft stock seems to have slid off a cliff in the past two months.
Despite having an excellent Pro Day, Fields apparently won’t even be the third quarterback taken in this draft. According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco will be taking Mac Jones at three after the Jets take Zach Wilson at two. That would leave Fields as the fourth or fifth quarterback.
It would be a monumental mistake for the 49ers to do this. First of all, Jones does not have the mobility that Fields has. Kyle Shannahan’s offense is predicated on a quarterback who can move around in and outside of the pocket. Fields is the ultimate weapon in the draft in that regard.
For some reason, teams are just discounting just how good Fields was in college. He finished top-10 in the Heisman voting twice! He played in a National Championship Game! I don’t understand when winning games suddenly became a bad thing.
I see that people are making the point that Ohio State has never had a successful quarterback in the NFL. While that isn’t untrue, that has nothing to do with Fields as a prospect. Fields is the better prospect of any of them. The nonsense about his work ethic is clearly false too.
At this point, I’m hoping Fields falls to my favorite team and then he can prove to everyone why he should have been the second quarterback taken in the Draft. I truly believe he can succeed with any team that drafts him. His skills are that good.
