Ohio State football: Stroud appears to be QB frontrunner
By Coop Ledford
Gone to the NFL is Justin Fields, now a three-man quarterback competition has emerged within the Ohio State football program. Spring practices have begun, and sophomore C.J. Stroud appears to be the frontrunner for the job.
While coaches have not commented on who is leading the quarterback battle, it has become apparent that C.J. Stroud is the likely frontrunner, at least to this current point in time. On Friday it was Stroud who began offensive drills first, followed by fellow sophomore Jack Miller III and five-star freshman Kyle McCord.
At least two of the three quarterbacks have had the chance to work with members of the first-team offense. On Monday Kyle McCord delivered a perfectly placed football to Jeremy Ruckert for a touchdown, while Stroud has been working with the majority of the first-team offensive line and receivers.
The quarterback depth chart will not be decided in spring, and there is quite a long way to go until a winner is announced. The spring game, scheduled for April 17 at noon, should offer some insight into who the top-two quarterbacks are, as one will start for the Scarlet Team and the other starting for the Gray Team. In all likelihood, it will be the more experienced Stroud and Miller as the two starters, with McCord coming in to follow.
This will be the most competitive quarterback battle at Ohio State since Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow fought for the starting job in 2018. Quarterback battles may become a fairly common occurrence in Columbus over the next few years, as the top-rated high school quarterback, Quinn Ewers, will join the Buckeyes in 2022.
It will be a highly competitive and entertaining fight for the starting quarterback job. The competition will go on for all of Spring ball, and in all likelihood, a starter will not be known until shortly before the start of the season.
The Ohio State football team will begin the 2021 season on the road against the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Thursday, September 2. We, like all of Buckeye Nation, will keep a close eye on the quarterback race, and circle back with any updates.
