Mike Nugent won a national championship with the Ohio State football team. No, it wasn’t in 2014. It was way back in 2002. He was one of the best kickers in the country. In fact, he won the Lou Groza Award for being the best kicker in America back in 2004.

Nugent has stayed in the NFL a long time. He was a second-round pick back in 2005 by the New York Jets. Picking a kicker with a second-round pick is extremely rare and very bold. That’s how good Nugent was though. It was deemed justifiable.

Nugent only spent four years in New York though. Since then, he has played for the Buccaneers, Cardinals, Bengals, Giants, Cowboys, Bears, Raiders, Patriots, and Cardinals. That’s a total of 10 teams in his very long 16-year career.

Kickers can play for a really long time. Just ask Adam Vinatieri. Nugent is 39, which isn’t a terrible age for a kicker. He did only play in four games last season and only attempted 8 kicks and made 7 of them and make all 7 extra points he attempted. He also got signed in the middle of the season.

This too could be the end of the road for Nugent. I would be surprised if he was signed before the season started. There is a chance he gets signed in the middle of the season if someone has an injury or if another kicker is ineffective enough to get cut.

I hope all of these former Ohio State football players do get another shot in the league if that’s what they want. I have no doubt that Hooker will get signed. The other two are more questionable though.
