Ohio State football will soon be losing assistant coaches
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program has been so successful under Ryan Day that the program will soon start to lose assistant coaches to other programs.
The Ohio State football program has had a very smooth transition from Urban Meyer to Ryan Day as the head man in the program. Day has also done a good job with his assistant hires and those assistants have really helped this program go great places.
They have already had to deal with some assistants flirting with other programs. Al Washington was offered the Defensive Coordinator position with Tennessee. That job was a promotion that came with a pretty good pay raise. In the end, he declined and returned to the Buckeyes.
Washington has indicated that he does eventually want to become a DC and also a head coach. He won’t be in Columbus forever. Some program will offer him a better situation and he will pounce on the opportunity. Ohio State has to be ready for that.
Brian Hartline is in the same boat. The Wide Receiver Coach has been a ridiculously great recruiter. He has accumulated some of the top talents in the country. He has also helped develop Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson into top draft picks once they decide to head to the NFL.
The Buckeyes already lost an assistant in the offseason once Greg Mattison retired. They decided to not hire another DC and just leave Kerry Coombs as the sole DC. It will be interesting to see how Ryan Day handles assistants leaving for other programs en masse because it’s about to happen.
When you are a program with the success that Ohio State has had, it’s inevitable that they will lose a decent amount of assistant coaches in a single offseason. That is coming. The Buckeyes have to be ready for that.
