Ohio State football: Things are looking up for Urban Meyer in Jacksonville
By Zane Harris
The former Ohio State football coach is trying his hand at coaching in the NFL. It already is going well.
Urban Meyer shocked both the college and professional football worlds when he announced that he would be hanging up his hat as an analyst and stepping back into the ring as a coach. Even more shocking is that this time, he would be coaching in the NFL. This is a huge jump for any coach, especially one who has retired twice due to health issues.
However, Buckeyes fans know firsthand just how talented of a coach Meyer is. During his time with the Ohio State Buckeyes, Meyer coached the team to an 83-9 record. Including a National Championship and one undefeated season.
Urban Meyer and the Jacksonville Jaguars have made a little bit of a splash in free agency and are expected to have a big draft night.
In free agency, the Jaguars have brought in wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, punter Logan Cooke, and former Buckeye running back Carlos Hyde.
Meyer coached Hyde for two seasons of his tenure as a Buckeye. While Meyer was head coach, Hyde has totals of 393 rushing attempts for 2491 yards and 31 touchdowns. In the passing game, Hyde made 24 catches for 198 yards and 4 receiving touchdowns.
Although Hyde likely will not be the starting running back for the Jaguars, he still could end up playing a big role for the team. With Meyer knowing exactly how to use him along with the running back being one of the positions that are most prone to injuries, Hyde could see a career revitalizing year with the Jaguars.
Along with the moves that Meyer and the Jaguars made in free agency, they are also prime to have a franchise-defining draft. They have the number one overall pick in the draft and are almost guaranteed to draft Trevor Lawrence who has been compared to the next Peyton Manning.
The Jaguars also have the 25th overall pick in the first round from the Los Angeles Rams, the first pick in the second round, the 13th pick in the second round from the Minnesota Vikings, and the first pick in the third round.
They are projected to select quarterback from Clemson Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick, and wide receiver from LSU Terrace Mitchell Jr. with the 25th overall pick. They are projected to take safety from UCF Richie Grant with the 33rd overall pick and interior offensive lineman from Wisconsin-Whitewater Quinn Meinerz with the 45th overall pick, and cornerback from UCF Aaron Robinson with the 65th overall pick.
This would be a great place to start roster-wise for Urban Meyer with the Jags. It is unlikely that they will be real contenders in the first couple of seasons, however, they play in a relatively weak division and could have the next generational quarterback coming to their team.
