The former Ohio State basketball coach has been reached out to by a few programs. Could IU be the team that leads Matta to return to coaching?

The all-time wins leader as the coach of the Ohio State basketball program has been contacted by a few other programs to lead their teams. So far, Thad Matta has said no to every program that has thought about him. This includes programs such as Ole Miss and most recently Penn State.

Matta was let go because of health issues. He has lower back problems that cause him to have drop-foot in one of his legs. Teams were starting to negatively recruit against him. It was time for the Ohio State basketball team to find someone else and they have been just fine with Chris Holtmann.

That doesn’t mean Matta isn’t a great coach. He leads the program in all-time wins, has two Final Four appearances and a National Championship game appearance. He could really help a program turn things around. It just has to be the right opportunity for him.

IU just recently fired their coach, Archie Miller. I have had several IU fans reach out to me asking if Matta would consider taking that job. If you think about it, it does make some sense. He moved back to Indianapolis where his kids go to Butler. He has coached in the state before and has recruiting ties there.

IU would love to have Matta there. He would easily be able to turn that program around. The problem is, would Matta really want to coach there? He is still relatively young at the age of 53, but his health issues are not going away. It would also take him away from his family.

It would shock me if Matta were to take that job. It seems to me that he is waiting for the Butler job to come open. That would be the only job I see him taking if he coaches again. He’s coached there before and it would allow him to stay close to his kids who attend the school.
