Former Ohio State football assistant continues strange journey
By Ryan Stano
A former Ohio State football assistant has had a strange journey since leaving Columbus. His strange journey continues.
The Ohio State football team last won a national title back in 2014. They did so with one of the best three-game runs in the history of College Football. A lot of their success was due to their offense, which was coordinated by Tom Herman.
Herman then left after that season to be the Head Coach at the University of Houston. Two years after that, he was hired as Texas’ Head Coach. Then he started a weird back and forth with former Wide Receivers Coach Zach Smith about his wife, and that’s how Urban Meyer got suspended and ultimately left.
Last season, Herman got fired. He essentially lost his job once he lost Quinn Ewers’ commitment after he decided to choose Ohio State instead. Herman clearly had lost the ability to recruit at Texas and players were jumping ship left and right.
Herman now has a new employer: the Chicago Bears. Herman was hired as an Offensive Analyst. Basically, he is taking a year off from coaching to learn some things in the NFL and study film. It’s quite a fall from grace from being a head coach at one of the best places in the country.
There are a lot of Ohio State football fans that dislike Herman for going after Zach Smith. I’m not a huge fan of the way he did it either, but he is a great offensive coach. The problem is, he couldn’t get his players to play hard for him at the end of his tenure at Texas. No matter where you are, that’s an issue.
It will be interesting to see what Herman does after this year in Chicago. He might try to sniff around the NFL for a job. Heck, he might even beg Urban Meyer for a job on his staff. That seems unlikely to happen though. Herman will probably end back up in the college game at some point.
