Ohio State Football: When is the 2021 Spring Game?
By Coop Ledford
Last season spring games across the country were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but 2021 will offer a better chance of a Spring Game safely taking place. The Ohio State football team’s spring game may be the most meaningful in all of college football this year.
The spring game at Ohio State isn’t just a glorified scrimmage, it’s quite a big deal. From position battles to trying new plays, and sometimes close to 100,000 fans in attendance, the date of the Spring Game is always circled on calendars across the state of Ohio.
Nothing has been definitively set, but the Buckeyes are hoping to play their Spring Game on April 17, per Ryan Day. “It’s kind of a soft schedule based on a lot of things, but we’re hoping we can play the Spring Game possibly the April 17th weekend, and probably start in the middle of March. Four weeks of spring ball,” Day said earlier this month.
This season’s Spring Game will be very important for fans, players, and coaches. For the most part, fans have not been able to attend a football game at Ohio Stadium since November 23, 2019 when Chase Young and the Buckeyes beat Penn State, 28-17.
Players and coaches would love to be able to perform in front of fans again, but no announcement has been made in regards to Ohio Stadium’s allowed capacity.
The highlight of the Spring Game will be the three-man position battle for the starting quarterback job. Freshman five-star Kyle McCord will challenge sophomores C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller III to lead the Buckeyes offense in 2021.
The Ohio State football team will also get a chance to get their first look at some big-name freshmen. Running back TreVeyon Henderson will compete for the starting job, five-star defensive end Jack Sawyer will make noise, as will Emeka Egbuka, who was rated as the nation’s top wide receiver coming out of high school.
We will follow-up with any updates regarding the date of the Spring Game, if it changes, and if fans will be allowed in the stadium.
