Ohio State Football: TreVeyon Henderson a name to remember
By Coop Ledford
The Ohio State football program has produced great talent at the running back position over the last few years. Carlos Hyde, Ezekiel Elliott, J.K. Dobbins, Trey Sermon, and the list will not end there. Sermon set the Big Ten on fire late in the season while breaking records. Now there are big shoes to fill, enter freshman TreVeyon Henderson.
Most Ohio State football fans already know a good deal about TreVeyon Henderson. He is the number one rated running back in the class of 2020, per 247Sports. He has been offered a pro comparison to Christian McCaffrey and is a five-star kid from Virginia. He could have gone to school anywhere he wanted, and immediately compete for a starting job.
Henderson’s name will not only be a household name in Columbus but throughout the entire country, just like those who came before him. Henderson will have to compete with Master Teague, who started 2020 as RB1, and sophomore Miyan Williams for the starting job in 2021.
While Henderson might not be the week one starter against Minnesota, he will undoubtedly see a fair amount of playing time throughout the season and will turn heads. He has great speed, elite abilities to change direction, and a very high football-IQ.
There is a relatively small sample size to judge TreVeryon’s skills, but he made the most out of every opportunity. Henderson’s senior season at Hopewell High School in Hopewell, Virginia, was canceled due to COVID-19 concerns, but he would have put up video game-like numbers just as he did during his junior year.
As a junior, Henderson rushed for over 100 yards in 13 of his 15 games, averaged 12.2 yards-per-carry, accumulated 2424 yards, and scored 45 touchdowns. He also became a threat as a pass-catcher, as he added 283 yards off of 18 receptions, and scored an additional five touchdowns.
TreVeyon also was utilized on special teams as both a kickoff and punt returner. He added a total of 462 yards returning kicks and punts. He will see the field as a freshman as either a rusher, a receiver on certain plays, or a returner, and will make an immediate impact.
While the quarterback battle continues throughout the offseason, the running back battle may be just as intriguing to watch.
