Ohio State football: Why Kyle McCord should start at QB
By Ryan Stano
We have already given the case for returning players C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller to be the quarterback of the Ohio State football team. Now we take a look at the incoming freshman.
The Ohio State football team has a couple of interesting position battles on offense to watch this Spring. One of them is running back. The other is the most important position on the field, that of course being the quarterback position. Justin Fields is no more. Someone new will take the helm.
True freshman Kyle McCord is hoping that he will be that someone. He comes in being the new kid on the block. He has enrolled early, which helps his case. What hurts him is that he doesn’t know the offense as well as the other two quarterbacks since they have been in the system a year already.
For my money, McCord is the most talented of the three quarterbacks. He is a five-star recruit out of Philly that has all of the tools that you need to be a successful quarterback at the college level and beyond. He definitely deserves that five-star rating.
McCord has excellent arm strength and does well in the face of pressure. He is able to make throws with guys around him in the pocket. While his deep ball isn’t the best of the three, it is certainly adequate enough and will certainly get better with practice.
McCord isn’t fast by any means but at least has some athleticism. He won’t be asked to run much of the read-option if he is chosen to start. But he has great touch on his ball and can throw well on the run. His tape is super impressive to watch and makes me believe he should be the QB Ryan Day starts.
Of course, starting him next season would complicate the recruitment of Quinn Ewers. Day shouldn’t worry about that though. He should only be concerned about putting the best football players out on the field.
