Ohio State Football: Ryan Day makes changes to staff
By Coop Ledford
During this morning’s press conference, Ryan Day announced some changes to his coaching staff. Changes were inevitable after the retirement of co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison.
The coaching staff for the Ohio State football program will look a little bit different in 2021. Earlier today, Head Coach Ryan Day announced that Matt Barnes will be the new secondary coach. Barnes previously served as the Special Teams Coordinator and Safeties Coach.
Matt Barnes inherits the group of players that needs the most improvement. Ohio State’s secondary was the team’s biggest flaw in 2020 and ultimately held them back from being competitive with Alabama in the National Championship Game. The Buckeyes allowed 304 passing yards-per-game last season, which was the worst in the Big Ten.
Former Buckeye linebacker, Joshua Perry, shared his thoughts on the repositioning of the OSU assistant.

With Barnes now focusing on the secondary, Parker Fleming will be the new Special Teams Coordinator. Fleming was previously serving as a special teams quality control coach for the past two seasons.
The biggest question mark regarding the coaching staff was who would be the new co-defensive coordinator after the retirement of Greg Mattison? As of now, it does not appear that there will be a co-defensive coordinator for the upcoming season. Kerry Coombs will be the sole Defensive Coordinator. There is still plenty of time for another change to happen, whether it’s moving someone from within the program to a new position, or an outside hire.
As of now, this is the current Ohio State football coaching staff:
- Head Coach: Ryan Day
- Asst. HC/D-Line: Larry Johnson
- OC/TE Coach: Kevin Wilson
- DC: Kerry Coombs
- Secondary: Matt Barnes
- RB: Tony Alford
- QB: Corey Dennis
- WR: Brian Hartline
- O-Line: Greg Studrawa
- LB: Al Washington
- Special Teams: Parker Fleming
- Asst. AD/Performance: Mickey Marotti
This is a hire that Ryan Day believes is the best for the Ohio State football program moving forward. We’ll see if it pans out.
