Former Ohio State QB Tate Martell to transfer again
By Ryan Stano
The former Ohio State football player will be leaving Miami once he finishes school and will try to transfer somewhere else to see playing time.
Anyone who watched QB1 knows that Tate Martell is a very confident guy. He was a four-star recruit out of Nevada for a reason. Ohio State grabbed him and Urban Meyer was stoked to have him in the program. He even created a goal-line package for him to come in and run.
How far away those days seem now. Martell famously tweeted about Justin Fields’ decision to transfer into the Ohio State football program, telling him he better not miss twice. It was in fact Martell who missed, as he transferred out of the program two days after Fields arrived in Columbus.
Martell has since been at the University of Miami. He hasn’t played much and actually opted out of the 2020 season. Now it sounds like he will be finishing school and then transferring elsewhere to try and get his football career on track.
If Martell does graduate from Miami, he would be a grad transfer with two years of eligibility left. It’s hard to see him transferring to another power-five program. It’s almost certainly the case that none of those teams would give him the starting job. He might have to go to a MAC school at this point.
Martell had all the confidence in the world and did have one brief bright moment at Ohio State when he completed all 10 of his pass attempts for 121 yards and a touchdown while adding 8 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground against Rutgers in 2018.
His hope is to recapture that sort of play with another college program. I always like to see former Ohio State football players do well, but Martell is a pretty cocky dude. Some people are relishing him having to go to three different programs after all the crap he talked in high school.
It will be interesting to see where the former Buckeye ends up. It will be more interesting to see if he can actually have success at that place.
