Ohio State Football: McCord, Egbuka, Henderson, others arrive on campus
By Coop Ledford
Four five-star recruits, headlined by QB Kyle McCord, and all other early enrollees arrived at The Ohio State University on Friday.
In-person classes at The Ohio State University will begin on Monday, January 25. This allows multiple high-profile recruits to begin their collegiate career.
Soon-to-be on campus are four former five-star recruits: DE Jack Sawyer, QB Kyle McCord, RB TreVeyon Henderson, and WR Emeka Egbuka. A total of 16 new players are now in Columbus, in addition to the four five-stars, there are 11 four-stars and one three-star.
Emeka Egbuka was rated as the top receiver coming out of high school, and committed to Ohio State in December. Just over one month later he is on campus and is foregoing the opportunity to play a spring season in his home state of Washington. Ebguka will be in a very crowded wide receiver room but will compete for playing time in 2021.
Kyle McCord was rated as the number three quarterback in the nation, per 247 Sports, and a top-25 player regardless of position. He will have to beat out two sophomore quarterbacks that will be higher on the depth chart in C.J. Stroud and Jack Miller III. If McCord were to win the job, he would be the first true freshman quarterback to start for the Buckeyes since Braxton Miller in the fourth game of the 2011 season.
Running back TreVeyon Henderson joins Emeka Egbuka at being the top-rated player at their position. Henderson has been compared to Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey by 247 Sports, and will unquestionably see playing time in 2021. He could compete for a starting job but will have to take the job from Master Teague or Miyan Williams. The Buckeye backfield promises to be lethal once again.
The number one high school player in the state of Ohio was defensive end Jack Sawyer. Sawyer is a 6’5, 250 pound five-star from Pickerington North High School. Sawyer may not be a day-one starter but is sure to find playing time. Larry Johnson continues to bring in elite players on the defensive line. Sawyer could join Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, and Chase Young as the next superstar pass-rusher in Columbus.
The newly-arrived talent doesn’t stop with those four players, also on campus will be WR Marvin Harrison Jr., WR Jayden Ballard, CB Jordan Hancock, RB Evan Pryor, OG Ben Christman, LB Reid Carrico, DT Tyleik Williams, TE Sam Hart, OT Zen Michalski, S Jantzen Dunn, WR/Athlete Denzel Burke, and P Jesse Mirco.
