The Ohio State football quarterback took a big shot in the second quarter and was clearly in pain the rest of the game. Here’s the latest on his injury and how it might affect him in the National Championship.

The most important player for the Ohio State football team is Justin Fields. His play was one of the biggest reasons why the Buckeyes destroyed Clemson 49-28 on Saturday night. In that game, he took a big shot by James Skalski in the ribs/back area and it hurt him all game.

While Fields was able to finish the game and play amazing football, he was clearly hampered. The last thing Buckeye fans want to hear is for Fields to be hurt for the National Championship. If he is hurt in any way, it hurts Ohio State’s chances of winning.

The good news is that it doesn’t seem to be a significant rib injury. I was terrified that he had broken his ribs. The way he was acting, it sure looked that way. Based on everything we have been hearing, that doesn’t seem to be the case. It looks like it’s more bruising of the ribs instead.

No matter what the injury is, it won’t keep Fields out of this game. As we could see during the Sugar Bowl, the injury was strictly about pain management. As long as he can tolerate the pain, the injury doesn’t seem to affect his ability to throw the ball.

Protecting his injury does limit the playbook a little bit though. If he doesn’t get fully healed in the ten days between games, he probably won’t run the ball much against Bama. That takes away a dynamic part of this offense. The read-option game will likely be non-existent.
