Ohio State Football: Justin Fields cements his legacy
The Ohio State football team throttled the Clemson Tigers 49-28 in last night’s Sugar Bowl. Justin Fields cemented his legacy as an all-time Buckeye legend.
The Ohio State football team played its best overall game in year’s last night in the Sugar Bowl. The defense was hitting hard and flying around, the receivers were getting open and Trey Sermon was running like Zeke Elliot.
But last night belonged to Buckeye quarterback Justin Fields. With the demons of last season’s Fiesta Bowl haunting him, Fields delivered his best game as an Ohio State quarterback going 22 of 28 passing for 385 yards and six touchdowns. Yes, six touchdowns!
He did all this hurt as he was clearly in pain after a blow to his rib cage from Clemson linebacker James Skalski, who was ejected for the hit.
Fields had a look in his eye early in this game, wanting to finally get one up on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence who grew up only 30 minutes away from Fields, and whom Fields has been compared with his entire life.
Fields didn’t disappoint, setting the tone early with his legs and making smart decisions with the football. Fields smartly delivered key check downs to Sermon and utilized his tight ends in a big way early and often in this game. A huge change from what this Buckeye offense has shown all season.
But it was his toughness to go along with his excellent play that will cement this legacy as an all-time great Buckeye. Fans will never forget the guts that Field’s displayed in this game and what he said after it, via AL.com:
"“My body is pretty beat up right now, but I’m happy,” Fields said. “My teammates are happier. This is a feeling like no other. I know my body is going to be hurting tomorrow morning, but it’s worth it for this win and for my teammates. That’s what I was thinking, about all the sacrifices that we go through as a team, and that’s what got me through the whole game.”"
Fields is all about his teammates, and last night he proved it. He’s got about ten days to get healthy for Alabama. And no matter what happens in the National Championship game, Fields has already certified his place as a Buckeye legend.
