Storylines:

Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney ranked Ohio State 11th in his final coaches poll. Ohio State feels disrespected going into this game and looks to beat Clemson and advance on to the National Championship Game.

Ohio State Head Coach Ryan Day has suffered just one loss in his young career as a head coach,

that game of course was last year’s Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson. Day looks to avenge his only career loss and give the Buckeyes their first CFP win since the 2014 National Championship Game.

Justin Fields injured his thumb in the Big Ten Championship Game on Dec. 19 against Northwestern. Fields said he would be good by Friday night. He did struggle against Northwestern’s stingy defense, completing just 12 passes for 114 yards and two interceptions.

OSU WR Chris Olave is back in action and cleared to play after missing the Big Ten Championship due to COVID-19. Not only is Olave Fields’ favorite target, but he also played a crucial role in last season’s Fiesta Bowl, and looks for revenge against the Tigers.

Ohio State’s defense will have their hands full with Clemson. Trevor Lawrence is dangerous both through the air and with his legs. RB Travis Etienne adds to the ground attack for the Tigers, while WR Amari Rodgers will create a serious threat as he lines-up at the slot position- an area in which Ohio State has struggled to cover all season.

It is worth noting that Clemson Offensive Coordinator/RB coach Tony Elliott will miss the game due to COVID-19. This could be a significant loss for the Tigers who have one of the best scoring offenses in the nation.

One advantage the Buckeyes will have is with the running game. Both teams have top-ten rushing defenses, but Clemson ranks 64th in college football at rushing offense. The Buckeyes should be able to contain Etienne, containing Lawrence on the ground will be the more challenging task at hand.

Trey Sermon broke the school record for rushing yards against Northwestern, posting a jaw-dropping 331 yards. He is playing the best football of his life entering this game, and the short 13-day turnaround could be an advantage for Sermon and the Buckeyes.

Series History:

Clemson leads the all-time series 4-0. All four games have been in bowl games, with the last two meetings coming in the College Football Playoff. All four games have ended in heartbreaking losses for the Buckeyes in one-way-or-another.

Next. Ohio State gets long-awaited chance at revenge. dark

Odds:

Clemson currently sits as a 7.5-point favorite over Ohio State, with an over/under of 66.5, according to ESPN.
