After he retired because of health issues, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has been contacted by multiple NFL teams recently. Because of those health issues, Meyer is unlikely to return to coaching.

Ohio State has been fortunate with their coaching tree over the last 20 years. They went from Jim Tressel to Urban Meyer (after one year with Luke Fickell) to Ryan Day. It has been non-stop great coaching. Meyer is a huge part of that coaching success for the Buckeyes.

Meyer has now been contacted by multiple NFL franchises about possibly making the jump to the pros. He has never coached in the NFL and is reportedly intrigued by the idea of making that leap. It would be the one thing he has never done in his coaching career.

One of the teams that has contacted him is Jacksonville. Jacksonville is in line to get the number one pick in the draft. Meyer also has ties to the state of Florida after coaching at the University of Florida for many years. It does make some sense when you think about it.

The problem is that Meyer’s health issues are related to stress. One of the most stressful jobs someone can have is being a head coach. If Meyer was going to coach at any level, he would have stayed at Ohio State. I don’t think he coaches again.

Besides the health issues, Meyer is really good on TV. He has been really good as a studio analyst on FOX on the Big Noon Kickoff show. It allows him to stay close to the game without having all of the stresses around running a program or team. It’s the perfect situation for him and his family.

It would be shocking to me to see Meyer return to coaching at any level. I think he stays doing what he’s doing and stays out of coaching because that’s what his family wants him to do.
