Ohio State football: Kyle McCord could challenge for starting QB spot
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State football grabbed a bunch of great players during today’s early signing period. Quarterback Kyle McCord is one of those players and could challenge for the starting spot in 2021.
The Ohio State football program added a lot of quality young men to their program today. They currently have the second-ranked recruiting class in the country, but that could be raised to the top-ranked squad by February. One of their five-star guys is quarterback Kyle McCord.
McCord is a five-star kid out of Philly. He was one of the top performers in the Elite 11, which is a collection of 11 great high school quarterbacks at a camp showcasing their abilities. He has all the tools to be a great quarterback at the collegiate level.
With Justin Fields likely leaving after the season is over, McCord has all the tools to compete for the starting job in 2021. With that being the case, he would be the first true freshman to start at quarterback at Ohio State since Braxton Miller. It would be quite a story.
McCord certainly has competition for that starting spot next season though. He will be competing with Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud who already have a year in the program. Both have at least seen some game action in 2020, even though it hasn’t been much.
McCord has more of a complicated path to starting for the Buckeyes than just beating out Miller and Stroud. If he were to win the starting job as a true freshman, he would then have to hold off number one QB prospect in 2022 Quinn Ewers. That is a tall task in itself.
No matter what, McCord is a quality quarterback who has the potential to be really good for the Buckeyes. He will be given every opportunity to win the job in the Spring and has the talent to do so.
