Ohio State Football: Dabo Swinney needs to shut his mouth
As the Ohio State football team prepares to play Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship next week, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney spouted his mouth off once again.
The Ohio football team doesn’t need any extra motivation to go up against Clemson. Getting absolutely jobbed in last season’s College Football Playoffs, the Buckeyes were looking forward to sticking it to the Clemson Tigers in this year’s playoffs. But Clemson head Coach Dabo Swinney gave the Scarlet and Gray a little more fuel for the fire on Friday morning.
Swinney had this to say, via the Rich Eisen Show:
"“If I was on a committee, it would be hard for me to leave out a 10-1 Texas A&M or an 11-game Florida team over a team that’s played six games.”"
Oh really? Does anybody in their right mind believe Texas A&M is better than Ohio State? Or that a possible two-loss Florida Gators team is more worthy than then Buckeyes? Give me a break Dabo.
He then went on to say this gem:
"“And I think the Big Ten had the same opportunity and they chose not to play, and I think the only reason they ended up playing is because of the leadership of the SEC and the ACC and the Big 12, and have demonstrated that we can do it and do it in a safe way. So it’s been an unbelievably challenging season, that’s for sure, but I think that the committee’s going to have some tough, tough, tough questions to answer and things like that, regardless of what they do."
Let’s call this season what it is. A mess. According to CBS Sports, 128 college football games have been canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020. The Big Ten was right to have a concern and worry about their student-athletes, unlike other conferences.
To punish a talented Ohio State team because three of its games were canceled due to a pandemic is absurd. And Swinney knows it. As my colleague at Scarlet and Game, Ryan Stano, has pointed out, Swinney doesn’t want to see the Buckeyes in the playoffs.
But I wouldn’t expect anything less from Swinney, the man who said that Florida State canceled its game with Clemson over Covid-19 concerns was ‘just an excuse to cancel the game.’
Dabo Swinney has acted like a baby all year long in a pandemic ridden season. And it’s only a matter of time before he sticks his foot in his mouth again. Sooner or later, it’s going to catch up with him on the recruiting trail when parents ask hard questions on whether or not he values their son’s health over football.
