Could Ohio State play another game this weekend?
By Ryan Stano
With news that The Game is canceled this weekend, could Ohio State get another opponent to play this weekend?
Ohio State won’t be playing TTUN this season because of COVID cases (*cough* cowardice) within the Michigan program. Now the Buckeyes only have five games played and are currently ineligible for the Big Ten Championship Game. They don’t have the necessary six games played.
Could the Buckeyes grab another opponent to play this Saturday instead? That would be the best thing they could do if the Big Ten isn’t going to change that stupid rule. There are a few opponents that the Buckeyes would be able to play this weekend if they are allowed.
Maryland would perhaps be the most logical opponent. They could be switched to play the Buckeyes since they canceled their game on them earlier in the year. It wouldn’t be a rematch and could easily be pulled together by having Maryland’s current opponent, Rutgers, play IU instead.
IU would be the other logical team Ohio State could face. IU will likely have an open date after Purdue canceled their practices today due to COVID issues. They will likely have to cancel on the Hoosiers, which would allow them a rematch with the Buckeyes.
A lot of people seem to want the Buckeyes to play Texas A&M as well. They have an open date after their opponent canceled on them. It would be the 4th and 5th ranked team in the country going against each other and would settle the CFP debate of who should be ranked higher.
That game is the least likely to be played for a number of reasons. First off, it’s a non-conference game for both teams. The Big Ten would likely not approve a non-conference game being played. Secondly, it would be too dicey for both teams to play considering their standings in the CFP rankings.
Ohio State may not even be allowed to take on Maryland or IU. The Big Ten hasn’t said whether or not they would change the rules to allow a new opponent to be scheduled. They have been extremely dumb this entire season so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them nix anything that would happen.
We will keep you updated on any news that comes down regarding the Buckeyes’ schedule or if the Big Ten decides to change the six-game rule.
