Ohio State Football: 3 Takes from MSU Game
No. 3: The offensive line depth stepped up
No unit on this team was more affected by the COVID-19 protocols more than the offensive line. Missing starters Josh Myers, Thayer Munford, and Nicholas Petit-Frere, The depth of this unit was put to the test. And coach offensive line coach Greg Studrawa deserves a ton of credit.
Max Wray, the third-string offensive tackle, made the start at right tackle and played pretty solid. He picked up some blitzes and clearly knew his assignments for the game. The left guard spot was shared by Matthew Jones and Enokk Vimahi. Both of whom had good reps at the position on Saturday.
Starting left guard Harry Miller moved over to center and had a rough first half snapping the ball. Justin Fields saved him a few times in grabbing errant snaps. But once Miller settled down he was much better in the second half. Starting right guard Wyatt Davis was his usual dominant self.
The line surely didn’t have the cohesion that a regular starting unit would have but fore being patched together like this I think they did a really nice job. And a lot of younger players received valuable reps that will likely help them later in their careers.
Now we’re on to Michigan week.
