The Ohio State quarterback played his way out of the Heisman Trophy talk after throwing three interceptions against IU this weekend.

Justin Fields had aspirations to do a lot this season. They started with leading Ohio State to a Big Ten title as well as a national title. He also had aspirations of winning the Heisman Trophy after being a finalist a year ago. That goal is now out of reach after his performance on Saturday.

In a game in which he was trying to do too much, perhaps in part to show Heisman voters how good he is, Fields played the worst game of his career against Indiana. He only completed 18 of his 30 passes and threw three terrible interceptions that were all a product of bad decision making.

Fields was already going to be against the eight ball after the Big Ten had a late start to their season. At most he was going to have 9 games to show voters what he could do. Then the Maryland game was canceled last week and it shrunk his audition chances to just 8.

Maybe that’s why Fields was pressing so much on Saturday afternoon. He looked like a man who was trying to do too much out there. He made bad decisions that he didn’t even make in high school. That’s how uncharacteristic of a game Fields had.

While this game does take him out of the running for the Heisman, he can still accomplish his most important goals. He knows it’s not about his individual accolades as much as it is about the team ones. This is a team that can still win championships.

In order for them to do that, Fields is going to have to make fewer mistakes. He’s going to have to be the type of player he was before Saturday. I’m sure Fields can find a way to recreate that version of himself.
