A Q&A with former Ohio State QB Bobby Hoying
By Ryan Stano
The former Ohio State quarterback was honored with the Campbell Trophy and became the first Big Ten player to ever win the award.
Ohio State doesn’t have a rich history of great quarterbacks in program history. That is quickly changing with Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields being the most recent quarterbacks, not to mention Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.
Booby Hoying was a three-year starting quarterback in the ’90s and led the Buckeyes to the Big Ten Championship in 1993. Over the course of his career, he had a 30-7 record. Hoying was also a four-time Academic All-Big Ten winner during his tenure too.
Hoying became the first Big Ten player to win the Campbell Trophy, which is given to the nation’s top scholar-athlete on the football field, when he won it back in 1995. Hoying recently had a Q&A with the National Football Foundation about a myriad of things.
Hoying was asked who he would pick to dot the “i” and why. He responded with Eddie George because he was one of the best teammates he ever had. That checks out, considering he won the 1995 Heisman trophy and holds the school’s single-game rushing record.
When asked what his most memorable Big Ten game was, Hoying said it was the Penn State game in 1995 when Ricky Dudley caught a fourth-down conversion early on the game-winning drive. That was a great moment for Ohio State for sure.
One thing that stood out to me in his interview was his favorite song choice. He mentioned “Everlong” by Foo Fighters. I knew I liked Bobby Hoying for reasons other than football. That’s a fantastic song by an outstanding band.
