Storylines:
Rutgers is off to their best start since joining the Big Ten in 2014. The Scarlet Knights enter the game at 1-1, with a week one victory over Michigan State and a week two 37-21 loss to Indiana. Despite the loss, Scarlet Knights head coach Greg Schiano was proud of the way his team has played, saying ” things didn’t go well for a long period of time, and they just kept playing hard.”
Speaking of Greg Schiano, he of course was the Buckeyes defensive coordinator for three seasons and returns to the Horseshoe for the first time since leaving OSU. Schiano wants to make it more competitive than it has been. “If you’re not ready to play at optimal level, it’s going to be hard to move the ball, hard to stop them…” Schiano said, “This is the top of the food chain. We have to learn how to live and perform at the top of the food chain.”
One of the biggest storylines following the Penn State game was Shaun Wade. Wade struggled last week and it will be interesting to see how he performs against Rutgers. Ohio State coaches seem confident that he will play better throughout the remainder of the season. “I have no worries about Shaun Wade.” said OSU Defensive Coordinator/Secondary Coach Kerry Coombs.
Wade and the rest of the defense should play better than they have all season this week, as the Scarlet Knights have struggled offensively so far this season. Rutgers currently does not have a rusher nor receiver with over 100 yards. QB Noah Vedral has accumulated a total of 299 yards over his first two games, with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
If Rutgers is able to play a competitive game with Ohio State, their defense will be the reason. The Scarlet Knights enter week three with the fourth-best rushing defense in the nation, allowing just 79.5 yards-per-game or just over two yards-per-attempt.
The kicking situation is certainly worth paying attention to, as Blake Haubeil has been ruled out for the game as he nurses a groin injury. Dominic DiMaccio could be the starting kicker, or the Bucks could turn to freshman Jake Seibert, who conveniently lost his black stripe earlier this week.
Series History: Ohio State leads the all-time series 6-0, and all six games have been blowouts. The closest game the two teams have played was last year when OSU won 56-21. The Buckeyes have scored at least 49 points in each match-up, and have given up seven or fewer points in four-of-the-six games. It has been complete domination by the Buckeyes.
Odds: Ohio State sits as a 39-point favorite against Rutgers with an over/under of 70.5, according to ESPN.
