The Ohio State quarterback could take the lead in the race for the Heisman Trophy with another big game against Rutgers this Saturday.

Ohio State has dominated both of their opponents thus far this season, beating Nebraska and Penn State by healthy margins. A large reason why that was the case is because of how Justin Fields played. He was simply sensational in both contests.

Through two games, Fields has 594 yards, 6 touchdowns, and a grand total of just 7 incompletions. He has looked totally in control of the offense in both games. He has played so well that Ohio State hasn’t looked close to losing in either game.

Fields’ play has given him a chance to get back into the Heisman race. Initially, it looked like his chances to win the trophy were bleak. But with Trevor Lawrence testing positive for COVID and missing two games, including the Notre Dame game this week, his chances have improved.

The main competition Fields faces are from the southern schools. Other than Lawrence, Fields has to battle with Kyle Trask from Florida, Travis Etienne from Clemson, and, perhaps the frontrunner, Mac Jones. Jones has been killing it for Bama and now might move ahead of Lawrence.

As long as Ohio State is able to play all of their 8 regular-season games, Fields will have a really good chance to win the Heisman. If he continues to play as he has been, he will at the very least be a finalist for the second consecutive year.

It will all start with Rutgers on Saturday night. The Scarlet Knights aren’t the pushover that they have been over the last couple of years. Even so, this sets up for Fields to put on quite a show. Winning is also something that matters to voters. The Buckeyes are set up to do quite a bit of that.
