Ohio State football: Steele Chambers should get the ball more
By Ryan Stano
The Buckeyes had problems running the ball with running backs for the majority of Saturday’s game. Ohio State football did have one running back who looked good though.
Ohio State football fans have extremely high expectations. This has been the case pretty much since I can remember. This is why even though the Buckeyes won 52-17 in their opener against Nebraska, we must nit-pick. It’s just what we do.
One big area of concern is in the running back room. Gone is J.K. Dobbins after he had a 2,000-yard season a year ago. Now the Buckeyes are stuck choosing between Master Teague, Trey Sermon, and now perhaps Steele Chambers. None of them have a wealth of experience.
Sermon has the most experience of the three but has struggled with injuries throughout his entire career. He showed some flashes of burst Saturday, but not as much I was expecting. He doesn’t hit the hole very hard. Neither does Teague, who looked slow quite frankly.
Chambers was the only running back that showed any sort of burst through the hole on Saturday. Even though he only got the ball 4 times, he ran it for 32 yards. Last year, he only played in 3 games and was redshirted after carrying it 19 times for 135 yards. That’s 7.1 yards a carry.
Chambers wasn’t thought to be part of the running back discussion this year. Now I think he deserves more carries. He might even deserve a shot at starting. He has shown that he runs the ball hard and has decent vision. Teague still looks slow coming off his Achilles injury.
It might be an overreaction to want to put Teague on the bench this early in the season. But I think Chambers and Sermon deserve the majority of the carries against Penn State. At the very least, he deserves more time out there on the field.
