Ohio State alum J.T. Barrett signs with new professional team
By Coop Ledford
Former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett‘s professional career will resume, as it was announced yesterday that he has signed with the Alphas of The Spring League.
Barrett has struggled to find his place as a professional quarterback. After going undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, he signed a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints and was assigned to the team’s practice squad.
He has been waived and re-claimed by the Saints multiple times, with a total of 23 transactions. In October of 2019, he was waived for the final time by the Saints before being picked up by the Pittsburgh Steelers and being signed to their practice squad. He was waived in August 2020.
The Big Ten’s all-time passing yards leader will finally get his chance to start a football game, something he has not done since the 2017 Cotton Bowl against Sam Darnold and the USC Trojans, a game Ohio State won 24-7.
His first game will be on Tuesday, November 27 as the Barrett-led Alphas will take on the Blues, a team that is led by former Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson. While the two never faced-off in college, it will still be an interesting storyline.
The Spring League is a six-team league created in 2017, and all games will be played in San Antonio’s Alamodome over the course of five weeks. The season typically has taken place in Spring but has been moved to the Fall for the 2020 season. Games will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with select games being televised.
J.T. Barrett and the Alphas will be televised twice. Once on November 4 against the Conquerors, and on November 10 against the Jousters, both games will be broadcasted on Fox Sports 1.
