Ohio State football: Most underrated Buckeye on 2020 team
By Ryan Stano
We are inching closer to the first weekend of Ohio State football. Before the seasons officially starts, we take a look at who the most underrated player on this year’s squad might be.
Ohio State has a lot of highly touted players on its team. Most of the players on their roster were very highly recruited coming out of high school. Some have lived up to the massive hype while some have not. Bottom line is, most of their players wouldn’t qualify as “underrated” on most other teams.
And yet, because the Buckeyes are so talented, they do have players that are four or five-star recruits that could be termed as such. The player who is the most underrated for Ohio State this season is actually a former four-star recruit in his own right.
That player is tight end Luke Farrell. Farrell hasn’t shown up a lot on the score sheet over his first three years as a Buckeye, catching only three touchdowns over that timespan. But Farrell has done a good job in run blocking while out there too.
Farrell hasn’t gotten as much attention as his teammate Jeremy Ruckert has. Even so, Farrell is due for a good final year in Columbus. Coach Ryan Day has stated that he wants to get the tight ends more involved in the gameplan offensively. Farrell would definitely be in that plan.
Farrell has good size and knows where he needs to be on routes. Even though he doesn’t catch a lot of passes, those passes always seem to be extremely helpful in the course of the game. It might be a key first down or a touchdown that helps extend a lead.
Tight ends won’t ever get the love that they deserve, especially in run-blocking scenarios. But Farrell deserves recognition for his talents and should get to score more touchdowns this season. Ohio State football players deserve recognition, no matter what position they play.
