Ohio State football: Big 12 falling helps Buckeyes
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State continues to get help from other conferences while they sit on the sidelines for a couple of more weeks.
Ohio State doesn’t care about what other teams do. They are always focused on their team and who they need to beat in a given week. As we all know, they won’t play their first game until October 24th. Even though they don’t’ care about what happens around them, good things have happened.
The Big 12 continues to fall apart early in the season. Oklahoma lost their second game of the season already, falling to Iowa State a week after losing to Kansas State. They have completely dropped out of the rankings and have all but assuredly fallen out of the CFP race.
Texas also lost this past weekend to TCU. This happened a week after they should have lost to Texas Tech, giving up 56 points to them. Now that Texas has lost a week after squeaking out a win, they don’t look like a team that has a chance to make the CFP.
Ohio State benefits greatly from these teams losing so early in the season. Having the Big 12 essentially out of the CFP picture gives the Buckeyes some leeway with their schedule. They might even be able to lose a game now that an entire conference has been eliminated.
Oklahoma State is the only team that now has a chance to make it out of the Big 12. They have played two bad teams in Kansas and Tulsa and an average team in West Virginia. They are still undefeated and the conference’s best hope to have a CFP contender.
If Ohio State wins all of their games, the Big 12 won’t matter. The Buckeyes will be in independent of what happens in that conference. But it’s always nice to know that they have a buffer if they do happen to slip up.
