After a weekend of upsets, there are now only 4 Saturdays until the Buckeyes take on Nebraska. The AP Top 25 rankings this week include Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Ohio State. With Oklahoma and the defending national champs, LSU, losing this weekend, who will take their spots as potential College Football Playoff candidates?

With the current landscape of college football this season due to the pandemic, the quest to punch a ticket to the College Football Playoff will require a very little margin of error. Oklahoma lost a heartbreaker to Kansas State 38-35 on Saturday.

This Kansas State team lost its opener to Arkansas State two weeks ago. Sooner QB Spencer Rattler threw for 387 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. This is a terrible loss on the resume for the Sooners. Although it is only the 2nd game of the season for Lincoln Riley’s team, playoff hopes could have possibly drifted away already.

The Sooners were not alone in the upset club this weekend when LSU lost to Mississippi State 44-34 in their season-opening game. The defending national champions 16 game winning streak came to an end after the Tiger’s defense couldn’t keep up with Mike Leach’s ‘Air Raid’ offense. Again, with a small margin of error this season, LSU joins Oklahoma as two blue bloods who are currently on the outside looking in.

With Oklahoma and LSU losing this weekend, this could open up the chance of an unfamiliar program to enter into the College Football Playoff picture this season. Clemson will play both Notre Dame and Miami this season.

Alabama will face Texas A&M, LSU, Mississippi State, and Auburn. Ohio State’s schedule includes Penn State and Michigan. If Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama are the top 3 seeds in the playoff, which team could replace the likes of Oklahoma or LSU for the #4 seed?

Without having to play Alabama in the regular season, Florida could find themselves with a seat at the table in the College Football Playoff this season. Even if the Gators go undefeated in the regular season with wins against LSU, Georgia, and Texas A&M, a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship could still punch their ticket to the Playoff.
