The Big Ten has been a laughing stock with the way they have responded to media, parents, fans, players, and even coaches about the decisions they have made. National media has heavily criticized the way Kevin Warren has handled the situation. In order to get back on the right foot and try and make people forget about all the mistakes, Warren might push to put his biggest matchup first.

With enough of a smoke and lights show, the college football landscape might focus on the teams playing and put the offseason narrative to bed. This strategy could also be a way to make sure that your biggest money-making TV events happen if the season had to be shut down again due to COVID.

The Big Ten has shown that it wants to be incredibly risk-averse and making the biggest money at the beginning on a nationally televised game rather than having Ohio State and Rutgers air on the Big Ten Network will help turn eyes back towards the conference.

While this is the least exciting from a player and fan perspective, there are some factors that would point to it being the safest financial play. Given the decisions the Big Ten have already made, this option has to be considered.
