What Wyatt Davis coming back means for Ohio State football
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State will be playing football this Fall after all, and it looks like they will be getting back their All-American guard for this season too.
Before all of this recent craziness happened, Ohio State didn’t have any players opt out of the 2020 season. This was in spite of the fact that the conference still wasn’t set to play. Then two guys opted out last week. But it looks like they will be getting one of them back.
Wyatt Davis opted out after deciding it was better for him to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft than sit around and wait for the Big Ten to make a firm decision. Now that the decision has been made, Davis has indicated that he would like to return to the Buckeye football team.
Adding Davis back to this offense would be immensely helpful. The offensive line is full of studs already, but Davis was a consensus preseason All-American. Those don’t grow on trees. He is a big, powerful guard that moves guys off the line of scrimmage with ease.
Getting him back will be a big boost to the run game. Trey Sermon is already stepping into a new offense, so having the best possible offensive line is the best-case scenario for him. He can run through the middle of the line with more ease.
This obviously helps Justin Fields as well. Fields can use his feet to get out of trouble pretty well, but it never hurts to have a great offensive line. Without Davis, the line is pretty good. But it is great with him. That could make the difference in a potential playoff game.
Davis has some minor hoops to jump through to return to the squad, but that shouldn’t be an issue. The bigger question is whether or not Shaun Wade decides to follow in his footsteps and return as well. He was non-committal today while making an appearance on Sportscenter, so we’ll see where that goes.
Davis will get his chance to chase a national championship now. He should have a bigger say than you think about whether or not he gets it too.
