The Big Ten is canceling their 2020 football season. So what are the chances that Ohio State can join another conference this season?

There are reports flying everywhere about the state of the 2020 football season. People within the Big Ten refuse to acknowledge that the season has been reportedly canceled. It seems as though the SEC and ACC are determined to play, and so is the Big 12.

So where does that leave Ohio State? Players and coaches have been voicing that they want to play all weekend long. Clearly the decision to vote no on having a season is at odds with what those within the program want to do. Could they possibly join another conference for this season to play?

The ACC right now has 15 teams in it for this season because of Notre Dame joining the fray for 2020. Sliding Ohio State in there would make numerical sense and would make it very easy to make a new schedule. Travel wouldn’t be ideal, but it’s no different than traveling to Rutgers or Maryland.

Playing in the SEC would be a much tougher task. The South already has a bunch of COVID cases and exposing the students to any more risk of contracting the virus is out of the question. The Big 12 would be more of a viable option than the SEC.

Unfortunately, none of these options are likely to occur. Any move to another conference would likely need to be approved by a university president, and Kristina Johnson already voted to cancel the season. It wouldn’t make sense for her to approve a move to play elsewhere.

The only way something like this could happen is if outside pressure forces Johnson to change her mind. That means political pressure at the state level. Any threat of a decrease in funding to the university could also make her change her mind on the football season.
