The Ohio State football program has a lot of hoops to jump through to get a season in 2020. Athletic Director Gene Smith said that playing football is a “fluid situation”.

Gene Smith has a lot on his plate. He is trying to make sure that all fall sports at Ohio State are able to play coming in the fall. Ohio State football is at the top of the sports food chain at the university, and he had an interview on 97.1 the Fan this morning talking about mostly football.

While he was on Bishop & Laurinaitis this morning, he talked on a variety of topics regarding the football season for 2020. The first question that was asked was where the football season stood. Smith said simply that it is a fluid conversation.

Throughout the interview, Smith said several times that it is extremely important that the month of September is open. He says that having the month of September mostly open allows them the flexibility to move games if needed. That entire month may have just one game or it could have four.

When it comes to the issue of moving the season to the Spring, Smith says it’s too early to think about something like that. It has been discussed but is not something that really anyone wants to do. He made it clear that they are trying everything possible to get the season done in the Fall.

The Ohio State football team will have a walkthrough on Friday and their first practice on August 7th. Those are the two biggest dates to know of right now. Smith said he is very comfortable with how the walkthrough is set up, but not quite on the practice yet.

Smith, and all athletic directors across the country, is in a tough spot. He has to coordinate a lot of moving parts to make sure that not only the season can go on, but go on in a manner in which everyone is safe. Safe for the players, coaches, staff, and possibly fans too.

It’s a lot on his plate, but he says they are committed to keeping working at it. The entire interview is very fascinating and you can listen to it in its entirety here. Hopefully, they keep doing what they need to make football a reality this Fall.
